I don’t think apologies will be necessary with the iPhone images this time. More sunrise shots but the phone captured sharp images and they transferred to the computer in good shape.
When I left the house to go to work I noticed the clouds overhead but had doubts the horizon was clear enough for some light show color. I drove out to Moody Bridge Road just to see and guess I made the right decision. 🙂
Something told me to wait despite making myself late for work.
Bingo! I moved up the road a little bit to capture more foreground with the trees taking a larger part.
What a start. And, of course, the rest of the day paled by comparison. No doubt I’d have been happier with the 5D Mark IV but these turned out well so I’m happy enough for the sharing.
A magnificent moody sky.

It was indeed and one doesn’t see a sky like this often around here.

The sky is very dramatic with something of the seas about it.

I am not around the ocean all that much so that didn’t occur to me but if it suggests that to you then I am glad it does.

You should be very happy with those images!! I can’t say I’ve ever seen a morning sky like this! Spectacular!

Oh, I am very happy, Lori. And I am happy that I could share it. I’ve seen similar cloud formations but never one that looked like the shape of the clouds. It looks as if the east is pulling the clouds into a small container.

A lucky morning and I bet you had a great day after that beautiful start.

It’s been a few days now so I don’t remember much about it but the rest of the day was work so… 🙂 The morning however will linger for a long time.

Bingo! I saw the clouds as an upside-down highway in the sky.

Maybe I should have waited a while longer for the chariots of fire to come along that highway.

I bet these spectacular photos provided an excellent excuse for showing up late for work, Steve.

Fortunately, as long as I don’t have any appointments, showing up late is of little concern. My employer appreciates my photography.

Yeah, carrying heavy glass is a pain. I am thinning the collection I carry.

Most of what I shoot requires heavy gear unfortunately. I have used a monopod more lately, as long as I’m not going for any in flight shots.

With a gimbal head?

No gimbal. I use a decent tripod head though. A gimbal really is much more work when out. I liken it to carrying the Eiffel Tower on your shoulder.
People have asked me in the past about the monopod so if you search my site a post is there with images of what I have, Ellen has a similar setup from different Mfgs.

I do have a monopod but have never used it. I don’t really have big glass, aside from the 100-400, so don’t need it.

Right after the last image the color started to dissipate into yellow. And I was able to do some Snapseeding to share on Facebook so didn’t ha]ve to wait to share. These I put through LR and PSCC before posting here.

Wow–incredible capture, Steve! I agree with another poster–should have called in sick. 🙂

It was definitely a memorable moment that I won’t forget. Can’t imagine a much better sky. I could have but the light faded and my car payments did not. 🙂

I enjoyed seeing the progression almost as much as I enjoyed the clouds. It’s rare for us to get cloud streams like that, and they certainly put on a show for you. Beautiful.

It was most enjoyable to see this develop. I posted something along the same idea a few years ago which you saw previously.
I don’t see formations like that very often and when I do not with illumination like this. Lucky morning.

The scene in your photos took my breath away, Steve. Thank you for being late to work. 🙂

I was too rapt with what I was doing but it is possible I wasn’t breathing for a short time too, Tanja. 🙂 It was definitely a favorite and breathtaking moment from my days of photographing sunrise. Thanks, Tanja!

Crazy. 🙂 I love the iPhone for skies, especially for not blowing them out and getting a full range of tones.

It does a pretty good job most of the time but occasionally gives me an amorphous bright blob of sunlight and the sky around it.

So glad you waited—and got more foreground trees. What a sky.

Thanks, Linda. Yeah, I am glad too that I walked a little closer and thought to increase the presence of the trees.

Amazing sky.
The picture where you moved closer to the background I like best. That makes it so much more dramatic. And the colours play out better against the silhouette of trees.

Thank you, rabirius. I agree. I suppose if the first two stood alone they’d be fine but the third with larger trees is definitely my favorite of the shoot also.

Watchers (should!) do NOT care about tool you use to take the picture. Expensive camera, phone, leaky potty or used sock… – it don’t bother me, if I see eye-catching motif.

🙂 I like some of your imaging choices. A friend and I used to say that we would try to tell what camera brand was used in an image and of course we could not. The image itself is what counts. Thanks!

Fabulous! It was worth being late for work for such stunning images. I particularly like the last one, where the trees are bigger in the frame.

I am lucky to have a reasonably loose schedule for work so a bit late, if there is no appointment, is not a problem and my employer is very supportive. I am able to hang prints in our store and a few have sold. Thanks, Ann!

This is the time of year for those who are not so early out of the house. As far as me being an early riser, I find it a little more difficult as the years pass by.

Even without the colors that was an amazing cloud formation. But I also think the color was worth waiting for, so I’m glad you did.

I agree. Just the clouds themselves were a worthwhile subject. But for sure the color sent it over the top.

WOW! That’s an amazing and crazy sky! You did good devoting most of the composition to the sky and I enjoy the tree horizon below.

The larger sky was my first reaction to create the feeling of the huge expanse of clouds. It was a real sky filler and much larger than I expected at first. Thanks!
