Lots of insects at the wet meadow this morning. This hopper was my first encounter.
Red-legged Grasshopper-Melanoplus femurrubrum
I continue to be impressed with this 180+2.o combo. These are pretty common and can be large enough in numbers to be garden pests. I have never seen one eating anything so far.
Amazing details, Steve, right down to the hairs on its belly. Wow!

Thanks, Eliza. When I first started photographing insects I was surprised at just how hairy they actually are.

Thank you. They are complex but handsome little beasties.

Nice details, of course, and the green offers a good contrast with the reddish parts of the grasshopper.

Thanks. As common as these are, I always enjoy seeing and photographing them. Here in the north our grasshoppers are not too colorful compared to the Eastern Lubber found in the Southeast.

The complexity of that creature is astounding! What a joy it must be to get it on your camera.

I do enjoy seeing insects close up and their complexity is astounding. Of course nothing in nature is for naught so all their design has a purpose but how each evolved is amazing. Thanks, GretchenJoanna!
