I don’t know whether reservoir smoke is a real thing, at least in the language, but the fog that rises from a warm ocean on a very cold day is known as sea smoke. Sunday was very cold, as I mentioned in the last post. Tomorrow morning is to be even colder with the morning temperature about 0°F with a breeze giving us wind chills in the -20° range.

Stephen, this is spectacular. We Great Lakes people are also experiencing sea smoke this past week as we transition from a warm fall to the polar vortex. It never fails to enthrall, and you have captured its beauty and mystery.
I don’t always comment , but I always enjoy your work., and I’m grateful to you for contributing something so special to my life.
Merry Christmas!

Thanks very much for that, Jan. I appreciate when folks let me know that my images bring pleasure.
I would enjoy experiencing the Great Lakes in winter…I think. One of my blog acquaintances posts some amazing ice images from there.

I love the fog and the sunrise colors. Well done. I’ve been looking for a scene like this for a while. I’ll keep looking…

Thanks, Terry. I am fortunate that the reservoir often gives off fog at various times of the year and I can find valley fog in Quabbin Valley throughout the year.
Good luck. Sometimes saying that brings it on quicker.

Such a warm view of such a cold spot. It’s truly beautiful. The tops of the clouds remind me of the wind blowing the tops off the waves in Steve’s Moro bay photos today, but the bottoms are just as lovely, with those fine tendrils of fog hanging down.
I was thinking about sea smoke this morning. Our water temperature’s been holding between 60-64F, but on the weekend we’re forecast to have a thirty degree temperature drop: from 75 to 45. If all the conditions are right, that could do it.

I hope your forecast holds and you do get some smoke, Linda. I imagine you could make some interesting images with those boats along your shoreline.
It’s amazing how different events in nature can often resemble others.

The scene looks ethereal with the rising fog and a background of glorious colors. Simply beautiful. I’ve never seen a fog that looks like clouds. Magnificent photography.

Thank you, Yvonne. We do get to see this over the reservoir fairly often. Also the fog draping over the Holyoke Range often resembles clouds too. I’m lucky to have this happen so close by so often.

You really are lucky. It is quite beautiful in your photos and I imagine it to be spectacular in person. 🙂

It’s hard to take this cold. I really hate it. You’re beautiful image here, though, I really think is smashing. I hadn’t heard of fog called sea smoke before. That’s fun.

I know I sound like a broken record sometimes, but I do have a love/hate relationship with the cold. Basically I do hate it more, but love what it does to water and the images I am able to make as a result. Now…if I should get a chance for a sun dog I’d happily freeze my butt off. 🙂

Very nice scene. We had that 0˚temp this morning. Sunday morning will be colder.
Stay warm.

Tomorrow morning is supposed to be our peak low. We’ll be lucky to see +1° all morning before the temperature rises to the teens after noon and 60 mph winds could be gusting tonight into tomorrow about 11 a.m. I’ll be bundled up like a second grader, I think.

Wow. That will be quite a breeze.

Absolutely beautiful, Steve! The color, the fog, those couple of trees sticking up a little on the left, very nice.
It’s definitely getting colder, though we might be 20 degrees or so warmer than you. And we’re supposed to be back up close to 60 by Sunday early morning. It’s looking like a rainy weekend down here.

Thanks, Todd. We’ll see “warmer” temps this weekend but there will be a mix of snow and rain on Saturday. 60° sounds fantastic.

Believe it or not, I am usually much more excited by the prospect of fog than a nice sunrise. Woo-hoo, indeed.

Those are beautiful pictures, for sure! I love watching the morning fog as the sun comes up. There is a park near me that I go to early in the morning, and there is usually a waist-deep “carpet” of fog that rolls down a nearby hill. It has a very calming effect on me and helps me prepare for my day. Thank you very much for sharing!
