I am a little free and easy with the titles (although mold is a fungus)…this isn’t very moldy, but it sure is sweaty. The bracket fungus Red-banded Polypore (Fomitopsis pinicola) aka Red-belted Conk quite often exudes sweat-like moisture (guttation) in the heat of the summer. I have only seen this fungal species do this but it is quite common in green plants and found on the tips of leaves.

Here’s a small button of a conk forming on a pine near Jordan Pond in Acadia N.P., coastal Maine.
Obviously, it is too early to find sweaty mushrooms, but with some luck it won’t be too long a wait.

Those are unusual fungi.
Today we were visited by a mutant black squirrel. First time at our feeders. We’ve seen them in other parts of town. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_squirrel

Mutant, yeah I guess? When I hear mutant I think more like the X-men than squirrels. 🙂 They are a pretty common around here and we have quite a few in the neighborhood.

It’s so interesting how far into tangents the longing for warm weather can transport us. I can’t say that I can’t wait for it to be so hot that one sweats like a guttating mushroom, but t-shirt-and shorts-temperatures will sure be welcome! BTW, Steve, I share your fondness for fungi.

You do turn up some of the strangest things. I can’t decide which photo is the weirdest, so I’ll declare it a tie.
I did laugh at this: “…Red-belted Conk quite often exudes sweat-like moisture (guttation) in the heat of the summer.” It made me think of Key West, especially their Independence Days, when red-belted Conchs often exude sweat-like moisture in the heat of the summer: like this.

Very unusual. Never in a million years :-, would I have know that mushrooms sweat. I somehow manage to learn something new every day and this is the highlight for today.

As far as I know it is only this one species that sweats, but that certainly does make it an interesting mushroom. Conks are generally pretty woody, so even the ones that are edible are not very good as a comestible. I am glad to have shared a little something new with you, Yvonne. Thanks. 🙂

Wonderful photos Steve, but I must say I find it hard to find the second fungi attractive. It’s a bit like saying “ooh look, some lovely mucous, mmm!”

I prefer my mushrooms sweating in olive oil or butter and paired with garlic. 🙂
