For the end of the Atherton Brook images, that is. I’ve one more that I want to share.
I liked the combination of motion and splash. It took more than a couple of attempts to get the flow exposure right overall and then add a bunch for the splash.
F/5.6@1/13 sec, ISO 800, 70-200@115 +CP.
It’s funny how things seem pretty constant…the rocks don’t move, the water’s flow is steady, yet there are enough reactions to the water’s motion and rock’s resistance that one cannot predict easily when the optimal splash will occur. I watched the action for a long time trying to anticipate a splash but it really was hit or miss.
In photographing waves breaking along Lake Michigan three years ago and at Acadia last year I had the same problem catching the right moment. Some of the time I tried to anticipate, as you said, and at other times I set my camera to burst mode in the hope that by taking several pictures per second I’d occasionally hit a good configuration of water.

Yep, just like photographing wildlife.

Well, I’d say the photo’s a hit. I understood everything in the technical information except +CP. Even a search didn’t help much — what is that?

Thanks, Linda. CP are the initials for circular polariser. They pretty much live on my lenses and only come off at certain times like when shooting directly at the sun or moon, or to increase the speed of exposure as they cost 1-11/2 stops.

Ah — I even have one, and still didn’t know the meaning of the abbreviation.

Marvelous shot. So many waterfalls to photograph. I keep wondering if you have a running list that you refer to before you head out in the early morning hours.

In a way, yes I do, Yvonne. Sometimes I head out with no location in mind and gravitate somewhere and others I do have a specific goal in mind. The fun ones are the unplanned. 🙂 Thanks.

OK. You’re forgiven. Please let it happen again. The dynamic vs. static really works here, and I know from experience that it’s difficult to capture. But you did. Beautifully.

“Please let it happen again”. I never should speak definitively as I do have one more. Not sure how to title it. Maybe blame you? 🙂
These are always a challenge. It’s not always apparent whether soft or sharp capture is best so I try to cover both and see what works best. Silk is nice but some times coarse works.

Secret photographer’s lingo. Actually most photographers just say polarizer without trying to look cool. :-).

I too like the combination of motion and splash, 🙂

I always try to simplify an image, but there are times when chaos rules…in a good way. Thanks!

You’ve made a splash with this one, Steve 😀 I read how you did it, but still don’t see how it was possible. Nice going.
