10.10.2022 American Burnweed

I posted a bud with bee a little while back but this showcases a bud with bloom.  That’s a lot of seeds and might explain why this qualifies for “weedship” as it has spread all over the side yard where I have our wood pile and my splitter.  Prolific is an apt description of its abundance.

American Burnweed-Erechtites hieraciifolius var. hieraciifolius

There are two subspecies of Erechtites hieracifolius the other being Erechtites hieracifolius var. megalocarpus.  This one grows in fields which my yard qualifies as and the other near sandy beaches and salt marshes which my yard does not qualify as. Both are natives.

The bud reminds me of our non-native spiny sow thistle, although the flower is much prettier.

I likely would have misidentified this as dandelion. I like how you have the two buds, open and closed, together.

    • Thanks, Todd. One of the nice things about having a little wildness in the yard is the opportunity to observe things over time. I was able to find this at just the right condition for the comparison.

As Todd and Linda point out, very reminiscent of dandelions and thistles. All those seeds! Talk about an efficient delivery system!

    Very effective side-by-side portrait.

Kind of like a dandelion having a bad hair day. Nice composition.

  8. This looks a fair amount like a Texas dandelion at similar stages.
