These are not after your blood although they are decomposers.
Pleated Inky Cap-Parasola plicatilis pops up during the night often after a rain. When I saw these the first time in our yard I thought they were just some little gray mushrooms of little note. But a closer look changed my mind after seeing the neat pleated shape with those nice ridges. Once the sun rises they dry up until the next wet night. There should be a tiny elf taking shelter below the parasol…maybe with a Keebler cookie and some Miruvor (Tolkien reference).

You say these come up during the night. Does that mean that if you watched for a few hours you could see one of these rise off the ground?

Like an umbrella, the mushroom closes when the rain stops, and the sun rises.

After our recent rains, one of my favorites emerged. The genus is different, but the delicate parasol shape is the same. I love its pretty lemon-yellow color — and someone actually did a time lapse. The pleating on yours makes up for the somewhat dull gray color.

Thanks for the link. I’ve seen a few time lapses of mushrooms over the years but never felt motivated to do my own. It is an attractive little mushroom and good to know what it’s economic status is within the ecology of my yard.

Fascinating. I think I might have found some of these during a recent early morning hike. Not entirely sure, but the shape is right and I do recall the pleated shape. Interesting how they come up at night and then dry up in the sun. Vampiric mushrooms, what an idea! 🙂

The fungi world is full of strange tales. There are a lot of parasol mushrooms but the strong pleating does make these distinctive.

Parasola plicatilis does look like a parasol … another cool nature design! Did you check to see if there was a tiny frog taking cover under it? 😀

As a matter of fact I did. 🙂 No luck though. Of course the mushroom is so small I might miss anything tiny enough to hide beneath it.
