While jockeying for position between the two Frog Friday shots of August 5, I spotted this young and colorful bullfrog sitting a few feet away from the larger and more mature frog.
Female bullfrog-Lithobates catesbeianus in Poor Farm Swamp on August 1, 2022. Those are three Lily pad planthopper nymphs to her right. It always amazes me that they wander frog-occupied lily pads with apparent impunity. Guess they just aren’t bullfrogs’ cup of tea.
That’s one gorgeous frog.

You sure seem to live in a fruitfully frogified region.

Generally yes but I haven’t seen any woodland frogs and few toads this dry year. They must be about but so far no luck.

Very nice, the texture and subtle colors on the skin of this frog. I rarely see a frog around here in this irrigated glorified desert.

Thanks, Alessandra. Do you see many toads? The way things are going we may be a desert one of these days.

Not really. Very seldom do I see any. I recall a photo outing once someone saw a toad, 15 photographers lined up for a shot of it 😅

Must have looked like one of the arch shoots. 🙂

She’s a happy frog or at least she was for this photograph.

He looks like he’s biting his lip. I wonder what he’s thinking that he doesn’t want to say?

If she is like some of my customers maybe she’s holding off on giving me photography advice.

I’ve decided that I call all bullfrogs ‘he’ because of the association of ‘bull’ with males — at least, when it comes to cattle.

No problem here. Since I am the poster I feel responsible for the gender if I know it. But many people assume maleness with animals so it’s not anything important unless the subject is looking for a mate.

It’s very handsome. I guess I’ve never seen a youngster before as a two toned frog is new to me 😊

I’ve seen frogs with darker and lighter tones but this was the first I’ve seen with such brightly colored legs. They won’t stay like that for long. Sometimes the younger ones are all green too.

I don’t know that I’ve ever noticed one with such yellow arms and legs. That’s fascinating. Great find, and very nice pose.

Thanks, Todd! I hadn’t either. I’ve seen different shades of green, and I suppose one could claim this to be a shade of green, but never quite like this.
