For making more wasps apparently. Actually this was evening so not quite dark yet.
Thread-waisted Wasps-Ammophila sp. These two were flying all over the boneset patch in tandem.
Here you get a good look at just how “thread-waisted” these wasps are. I have married friends who describe themselves as “attached at the hip”. These two, well I don’t think I need to say more.
When I first saw them I thought it was just one huge wasp. I had been seeing a rather large one and thought this was a similar species until I reviewed my first shot and saw the two heads. I have seen other insects stay in their mating attachment before, damselflies and dragonflies in particular, but this seemed different.
Fascinating and they are beautiful.

Several times I’ve also had that experience of seeing what I thought was one insect and eventually realizing it was two.

I’ve had many such sightings but seeing these two was an exciting encounter with them flying all over the garden.

I’ve also seen pairs of insects flying around while hooked up. Sometimes the togetherness has meant they couldn’t fly far, and I was able to follow and take more pictures.

Terrific photographic opportunity for which you took full advantage!
Insects are so challenging to photograph well. Thank you for demonstrating it CAN be done.

Thanks again, Wally! I am envious of some of the extreme closeups I see on the web but the majority of those are captive subjects which I prefer to not do. If I was a practicing entomologist I’d have good reason for collecting but don’t think that’s good just to make a photograph. It limits the possibilities but I have an extreme guilt complex and wouldn’t sleep at night with a box full of pinned bugs nearby.

I totally agree with your sentiment and ethics.
