I posted a Swamp Spreadwing a few weeks ago or so. I try to share different subjects, with the exception of bullfrogs, but like how this one came out so adding it to my WordPress media library.
Swamp Spreadwing-Lestes vigilax-male. No idea why the abdomen is slightly bent. Maybe a mating accident…I hate when that happens.
Nice capture, Steve, the pale background compliments it well.

What a long, slender body.

Hard to believe something this delicate is so ferocious.

Fortunately that ferocity isn’t aimed at us. Years ago I happened to be watching as a different member of the group, a dragonfly, suddenly zoomed off the perch it had been on and snatched a passing insect right out of the air, then flew back to the perch and immediately started eating its prey.

I think dragonflies were much larger back in the day. They are amazing predators, I read that they are the most successful hunters in the world percentage-wise, and are quite agile. They can move each wing separately and their maneuvering is astounding. A target has no chance.

Thanks, Donna. I remember marveling at the “darners” as a child.

That teal is on one of my favorite colors, and you’ve captured it well. I suppose it’s due to reflection, but even the wings seem to have a hint of teal.

I think it’s a combination of reflection and transparency. The abdomen seems almost dayglo or metallic teal.

All credit to Nature for the way so many insects are more beautiful than folks realize.

I’m not sure why your mind went to “maybe a mating accident”, Steve. 😉

Have you seen the contortions that damselflies achieve in mating? Of course I do have a questionable sense of humor. 🙂

Thanks, Denise. Damselflies are so delicate in appearance until they get hungry. 🙂
