There is a wooded area in Amherst where I can reliably, usually, find both pink and white lady’s slippers around this time in May. Sure enough there were plenty of pinks to photograph yesterday but so far not a single white. Still some time and several plants with no buds showing. While there someone walking his dogs, well not walking them as they were loose so walking with, told me about a spot on the other end of the woods and that’s where I found this little beauty.
As with the painted trilliums there is a good possibility that this is not the last of the lady’s slippers for this year. I made several other images and, of course, I’ll be on the lookout for white lady’s slippers this weekend.
A lovely find, Steve!

Yes, indeed, there she is! What a beauty. Right now we only have one location we know of with lady’s slippers but I keep wanting to explore and find more. I see this one is growing from a bed of needles, and all the one’s we’ve found are in similar areas. Is that very common with these? I know they rely on a particular fungus in the soil but I’ve not done enough research yet beyond that.

Most that I have found have been in pine woods, Todd. I have seen a few in other environments but whatever their requirements are they seem to be satisfied in those woods. Hope you find some soon.

The lines on the flower could be blood vessels, and the whole thing suggests a heart.

These have certainly captured many a heart so that could be reflected in their beauty.

The similar shapes of the leaves and flower is interesting. I’ve never noticed it before.

Some leaves are broader than others but there is a resemblance in most.

NICE! We had these growing on our property in South Jersey. I love them!

They do like pine forests and you had a lot of that in Southern Jersey. I’d love to have some in our small woods.

Lovely…the long pine needles make a nice background.

It’s hard to make a full plant composition without pine needles around here as I find them mostly in pine woods.
