North Quabbin at Sunrise looking toward New Hampshire and Pack Monadnock Mountain.
Our foliage is winding down, but this view up the valley from New Salem Lookout is always a bit later than most of our area for color. I was hoping to arrive at peak and couldn’t ask for better.
Very nice image Steve! Liked the Fall colors!

Do people know why this area’s fall foliage peaks a little later than other nearby areas?

This people doesn’t and I haven’t heard any concrete explanation. Most likely the low valleys get more moisture due to runoff and stay a bit warmer but that’s just a guess on my part.

I notice quite a bit of variation in areas around me – I think that it’s that some places are cold earlier than others. But our trees mostly have just a bit of yellow in their leaves – nothing like your magnificent colours. (Or even the very golden yellows I remember form Scotland.)

These valleys have always been a little later to reach peak. There must be a reason for that but I don’t know for sure.

This image — particularly the sky and the far hills — has the look of a vintage linen postcard.

It does remind me of old photographs but I wouldn’t have recalled the postcards without your mention.

Lovely lookout, Steve. I’ve been enjoying peak oak and beech this week, a splendid year for them, I think.

It’s a great location throughout the year although getting out of there in the winter can be a challenge. Some folks get stranded and need a wrecker to get out. Oak and beech it is now with maples pretty much done.
