Well, that’s all for September and our trip to Acadia N.P. It wasn’t as planned and that includes photography. Most mornings were cloudy, some overcast, some rainy, some breezy, and only one with abundant sunshine. But the most important part was our having a good time together which we did. Three different sleeping arrangements in two locations, three unpackings and packings of the car, and one night that we could cook our own dinner. Mary Beth doesn’t like spending money on dinner out but she did enjoy not having to cook for several days. And we had a lovely lunch at a favorite restaurant for her birthday.
Earlier that morning I visited an oft visited location that I call Otter Rocks (I don’t believe that it has an official name) along Ocean Path, between Thunder Hole and Boulder Beach, hoping for a sunrise shot even though there was some heavy cloud cover directly in the east. But northward was relatively clear so I found a composition I liked and waited. Some other folks liked that spot as well and plopped down right in the middle of it. I went for Plan B and made do.
We came home a day sooner than intended as a result of the early snafu and availability of places to stay. No problem, really. Lots to do here both photographically and yard preps for winter. As many say, “It is what it is” so make the best of it.

The Maine coast is beautiful. My brother used to live near Rockland. We visited and got a great tour of the area.

I would love to have more than a few days to explore the coast. A few days is not even close to enough just for Acadia. I guess we should visit other locations but we are really attracted to the park.

Mary Beth is much more adaptable than I and if it had been up to me I was ready to just head back home. Too reactionary and that would have been a mistake. She has saved me from bad decisions a few times. Maybe more than a few.
The shoreline has been evolving for centuries, battered by brutal winter storms and the remnants of a few hurricanes too. Many of the large rocks have been buffeted around and are not always where I remember them.

Togetherness is the thing—and that’s what you had.
The landscape is such an archetypal view of the Acadia shore. The sky’s doing a sort of yin-yang.

When I drove to this spot I saw the sky to the north and thought it was eastward. Once landed I saw how it was aligned and almost didn’t compose but then thought maybe. Turned out well worth it. It’s always a good thing to pursue things, especially since we are not paying for film and development. I’d rather toss things because they did not cut the mustard than look and see I missed a shot.
It is a curvy sky. The contrast surprised and pleased.

I think you and Mary Beth are good at rolling with the punches! Many times Forrest and I have set out with a plan, that didn’t turn out, but somehow we managed to have a better time with plan B. Happy Birthday to Mary Beth!

She is a bit better than I at that, Lori. I don’t have much of a temper but when it sneaks out and gets the better of me Mary Beth makes it go away. That was the case here. Often plan B turns out to be superior to A. One never knows. Thanks for the birthday wish.

Thanks, Eliza! That was how Mary Beth felt when we considered returning home. She needed a break, as did I, so we persisted and did find a place, or places, enjoyed our time there, and did a few of the things we hoped to do.

That’s an interesting landscape, reminds me a bit of the north east coast of Sweden where they have large flat rocks on the coast like that. Glad you had some good times!

Birthday wishes to Mary Beth! That looks like a fine plate in front of her; yours doesn’t look too bad, either. I like the various contrasts in the shoreline photo: trees and rocks, clouds and clearer sky. The muted colors are pleasing.

Thanks, Linda. Both were excellent. This restaurant never fails…at least for us. Mary Beth’s dish is Seafood Fettuccine with mussels. Mine was Fettucini with chicken, artichokes, roasted tomatoes, and lots of garlic. Dessert was Wild Maine Blueberry Apple Crisp with a scoop of vanilla.
The image is most everything the coast has to offer in one picture except crashing surf..

You made it work. When Joe had his stroke I had to stay in Pheonix (where it happened, the day we were to fly home) for a long time. I was constantly scrambling for places to stay but people were very nice and like you, I just made it work. Anyway how could you not have a good time vacationing in Maine?

It’d be difficult to not enjoy our time there but on that first night I made a great effort to be bummed. 🙂 Mary Beth wasn’t having it though so things got better.
