07.20.2021 Banded Longhorn Beetle

I am not sure what it is about Longhorn Beetles but I do enjoy them and hope you do too.

And, as an added bonus, this Gooseneck flower head has a double front and center.

It looks like this longhorn beetle is having a feast.

  3. Haven’t seen those around here, but I keep seeing insects in the garden that I don’t know – I need to find a good insect ID app and/or book – any recommendations? And perhaps also invest in a macro lens so I can photograph them properly! I like the bee just coming round the corner in this shot, and what fantastic detail on the flower.

  4. How common is it to find a double gooseneck flower?

It’s the perfect flower for this beetle. After all, many ranchers here transport their longhorn cattle in gooseneck trailers!

    • I haven’t seen cattle being transported in a trailer like that, most are closed, but I have seen pickup trucks pulling one. Maybe someone will decorate one of those cattle trailers with gooseneck flowers.

  6. The beetle definitely has a good taste in flowers!

  7. On the other side of the country, just this week I saw my first longhorn beetle in the High Sierra of Central California. Its head was completely covered in pollen from the corn lily flower it was sitting on. I’m not sure, looking at its picture now, that it was even alive. It might have just suffocated from pollen!
