When I walked into MacLeod Field (I only recently learned the actual name of what I have been calling Lawrence Swamp wet meadow) early last Saturday morning I didn’t expect to find orchids that early in the month but felt it was worth a look and there is always something like the Swamp White Oak leaves. Well, as you saw back on the 5th, there were a few Rose Pogonias to choose from. What there wasn’t a lot to choose from was this single Grass Pink orchid-Calopogon tuberosus that had a vine twirling around it.
I usually try to isolate a flower but liked this scene. I’ll go back this weekend when I am sure there will be more.
That’s beautiful and unlike anything I’ve seen before. Orchids are amazing!

It is a pretty little flower similar but different from the Rose Pogonia I posted the other day. They often grow near each other. This has multiple buds and flowers on a stalk while the other has a single bloom on the stem.

It’d be hard to isolate a flower with a vine twining around it. From your comments about not disturbing nature, I assume you’d never unwind the vine for the sake of a picture.

Nope. No gardening.

I think you acted wisely, Steve, in taking the picture of the flower together with its natural setting and not isolating it. Sometimes the beauty of a flower is being enhanced by its natural surrounding like in your photo today.

Very true, Peter. Beside that, I have made many isolated portraits of these so am always happy to find something different.

It is always such a treat to find a wild orchid. Great photo, Steve, highlighting the blooming elegance as well as the ladies in waiting.

So lovely! I like the way the vine leads the eye around the subject.

Thanks, Eliza! I do too although I think in the end it may drag the stalk down.

I like photos that show a bit of a plant’s world, as this one does. Even the spider-webbing adds to the effect.

It does give the viewer a better idea of how the plant takes its place in the environment. I do like an isolated portrait but having a bit of the surroundings is always a nice addition to the picture.

It is a nice little vignette of coexistence in nature. I don’t think the vine caused any harm.
