05.23.2021 Dutch Bonnets

Yesterday morning my mission was to visit a dependable spot for pink lady’s slippers and especially the white variant of Cypripedium acaule. Unfortunately, this year the number of plants there is lower than usual and there were no white flowers, only pink. Still, those that I did find were lovely as always.

These two especially got my attention for the curve of the petals that reminded me of the Dutch bonnets worn by ladies…at least in pictures that I have seen.  I’ve never been to Holland so my awareness of them is strictly vicarious.

Most of these I have seen droop their petals so this pair is a little different.

    Amazing! the balloon parts with pink veins make me think of hearts.

    I picked a good day to stop by~this is a wonderful shot! You’re right, it does look like that.
    I have been absent from WordPress because I was soooo frustrated with it. I could never get my site to work, and half the time they’d make me log in and then act like they’d never heard of me. So I said, “forget it”. I have missed you, though. Thank you for stopping by my site. 🙂

      Well, I am glad that it’s out of frustration with WP, well maybe not exactly glad, and not something more serious. I’ve never felt comfortable enough with WP consistency to even consider paying them for a step up. Constant problems. Maybe those are because I am not a paying customer but it does not instill confidence. Happy that you are okay otherwise. 🙂

    What a neat photo. Finding a matched pair must have delighted you. You’re right about the Dutch bonnets. I’ve never been to Holland either, but I grew up 30 miles from a Dutch town in Iowa, and frequented their bakeries at least a couple of times each month. Every year our high school band played in the Tulip Time parade, and believe me — there’s nothing quite like marching in wooden shoes. I still have a vintage Tulip time postcard that shows those bonnets. See?

      Thanks, Linda. So far you are the only one who saw them the same as I did. Your postcard does verify the look. I cannot imagine marching in clogs much less wooden shoes…they are sort of the same thing, I guess. I can picture the young women working at the bakery wearing traditional costumes along with the bonnets. I used to buy my lunch at a German deli and the folks dressed as if they were still in the old country. It was part of the charm.

    There they are! Absolutely beautiful, and I also love that curve to the petals. Sorry to hear about there being fewer than in the past, but glad to see you found some, just the same. We continue enjoying finding new plants along the trails. Of course, most choose to locate themselves right in the middle of throngs of thorny vines, but I can’t blame them. It’s good protection. 🙂

      Thanks, Todd! Lady’s slippers occasionally take a rest year, so I have read, so it isn’t necessarily a sign of trouble when the numbers are down. I’ve not encountered lady’s slippers in a thorny area but there are a couple of spots I visit where I do come out with some bloody scratches. A price but often worth it. 🙂
