Just a small shoreline treed sandbar that maintained some colorful leaves at Atkins Reservoir in North Amherst one day last weekend.
It’s brighter seen large.

Interesting to see a bit of color in our monochrome landscape. Of course, the gardener in me wonders why the pines are so stressed when the oak and beech look fine. 😉

Some oaks and beeches retain their leaves through the winter. The oaks remain brown while the beeches turn brown then gradually get lighter in color before dropping in advance of new growth.

Thanks, Tom! That’s what stopped me as I was driving by. The island does help to separate it but it’s the light and color.

It’s a beautiful image. I’m wondering whether the photographer might have worked a little magic in the darkroom to complement the perfect composition. If not, nature worked her magic. If so, you improved on it.

Guilty as charged…although nature did abet.I darkened the background some and increased the contrast to help the sand bar and its trees stand out a bit more. I also sharpened just the forward trees to help soften those behind. But the color and location was all nature’s work…well, the constructors of the reservoir are responsible for the island.

No guilt implied (I’m sure) or needing justification. A bit of burning and dodging are standard procedures in processing/developing our raw images. Hopefully we are well beyond the philosophy that any image should be shown a-priori as shot, as opposed to being developed to reflect the photographer’s vision of how it was envisioned.

I just meant that in the spirit of the phrase regarding something one has done. I’ve mentioned before that St. Ansel remarked that someone standing next to him for his famous Moonrise over Hernandez, NM would not recognize his final image. That’s good enough for me to be comfortable with how I process my images. It’s all there but like you say a little dodge here and a burn there.

What a very pleasant find. Even such subdued colors stand out really well against that background. And I do love that small amount of snow on the branches, I think that helps makes the photo.

The scene’s contrast was not quite as strong as I have presented and the snowy coating made me stop and make the image. I don’t think this would be as effective without it.
