Well, I got to see my ‘sea smoke’ this morning. The olympic-sized pool at the fitness center next door is steaming like crazy — and it’s snowing. We’ve got about an inch of sleet and snow on the ground. It’s not much, compared to what’s just north of us, but it certainly has given me an appreciation for what it takes to create this winter images.

Here’s a shot of the Gulf from Galveston. Too bad I can’t get there from here; there’s too much ice everywhere, so the Causeway over to the Island is closed.

      • That’s a lovely scene and were it not for your report of the weather could be taken for ordinary fog. I don’t think skidding off the causeway into the gulf is encouraged.

    • While we complain about certain winter weather events here in the northeast, they are expected and more or less routine with the occasional exception. In your neighborhood on the other hand there’s lots of difficulty and accidents to deal with…not to mention power outages. I don’t imagine many have wood heat to rely on. Sea smoke from a swimming pool! Now that’s something we’d not see here.

This is a fascinating way to photograph flowing water, my friend.

Beautiful – it’s full of movement, especially with the way the flow turns.

It’s lovely and almost monochrome, but the extremely-subtle reddish highlights in the delicate structures at the top provide a startling reminder of the natural color. I like this very much.

  7. Nicely done. You’re really pushing into abstraction here.
