I hope everyone enjoyed the holiday yesterday. We had a quiet day at home staying dry while we received about 2″ of rain. If it had been snow we would have been blizzarded. Should be some nice waterflow out there today.
On this day 6 years ago I walked down Old Enfield Road, Gate 5 of the reservoir, and witnessed this sunrise over Quabbin Hill.
I re-edited it to cure some flaws as well as posting a larger image. Unfortunately the one flaw I could not fix was the clipped edge of the boulder. The only remedy for that is to reshoot this some day. It’s overcast this morning so some other time. Something nice to keep on the back burner for a little while.

What a wonderful start to the day! Sometimes i think it would be lovely to have a house by the water – well, we have during summer – but no. It is too windy and nowhere to hide…I will enjoy images like yours even more!

I think the same, Ann-Christine. 🙂 I have seen some images, possibly even one or two near you, with a tiny house on an island or a shore. It seems idyllic but as you say, when there is a good wind or storm the living would be a challenge. It is nice that you have a summer home near water. 🙂

I love Linda’s comment that the rock appears to be smiling…I had totally missed that.
Love this image. It’s a perfect metaphor for the dawning of a new year.
It’s so difficult to recreate and improve upon an image that is already so pleasing. The clipping of that rock might just be what is needed to pull your eye into the scene. It is a great spot, and your next photo taken there might be totally different.
p.s. What a nightmare depth-of-field.

That’s a good rationalization for the composition, Bob. I’ll claim that as my intention. 🙂 It would be possible to come close if there were some similar clouds. This was made on a 12/26 so now is the right time for the sun’s location but actually I think the water is too high now after all this rain to have so many rocks visible along the shore. I have managed to redo a few images over the years but it does take a lot of luck and multiple trips and even at that it is always a little different.
I had rented a Zeiss 21 and it did a great job with the depth of field. My 16-35 does a nice capture of starbursts but the Zeiss is even better. It was a toss up between the two and I opted for the versatility of the Canon.

We got 2.85 inches of rain… If 1″ rain = 10″ snow, we dodged 28″ of snow… phew! Great water action out there today!

This would have been a huge snowfall if we had been about 30° colder. 60° was a ridiculous temperature for Christmas.
The water was great today although maybe there was a little too much action. 🙂

Actually you might be able to create a left edge for the boulder. In Photoshop you could extend the canvas size to add a thin white vertical strip at the left. Then select the vertical strip, hit the delete key, and use content-aware fill. With a little playing around after that you may be able to create a credible left edge for the rock. I’ve occasionally followed that procedure to salvage something that got clipped at the edge of the frame.

I’ve used that technique many times. I did try it here but the result was unacceptable. Trying it in increments just elongated the rock and a wide addition was all jumbled and messy.
