Sometimes the sky looks promising and others not very. That was the case yesterday as I left the house. At first I thought I’d go to New Salem but as I got to a spot where I could see the horizon the cloud bank made me think otherwise. So I turned and started toward Quabbin Park. But something said stick with the plan so I turned again and headed north. I figured that if nothing else, I could get one of the New Salem General Store’s great peanut butter chocolate chip brownies.
Upon arriving at the lookout there was no hint of color but the valley I often photograph with fog looked nice so I thought I’d concentrate on that. But as a few minutes passed there was a growing glow in the clouds. I started shooting figuring that would only last seconds and might fade if I waited. Well, I made many bracketed exposures with each exhibiting more color than the previous set. Finally it reached its most colorful effect before starting to ebb and this is that shot. It only required one exposure processed in Lightroom and Photoshop so all that bracketing was not needed. It’s always better to have more than one needs rather than fewer.
The sun was rising a bit to the right as you might notice but this view was much more satisfying than what was in direct line with the brightest sky.
There were two other people there. The first left before this began and the second as it was fading. Patience and punctuality paid off. And, yes!, I did get a brownie and it was as good as it sounds.
I did eventually go to the park as well and made an image there. Not sure if it will be wordless or not.
I like the island-like appearance of the hilltop surrounded by fog.

It often does have that appearance which I photograph often such as the moody cloud a few posts ago.

Stunning shot – so glad you waited. 🙂
btw, what is ‘bracketing?’

Taking exposures over and under an average exposure to get more detail in the shadows and highlights. Those would be combined for an image that would resemble what you saw and our vision has a greater dynamic range than most current sensors.
Thanks, Eliza.

You got there just as the party was gettin’ a glow on~nice timing! And then a brownie on top of that. I’d say that was a good morning.

It was a very good morning, Melissa. Today’s Wordless Wednesday post was a bit later after I was here.

Too bad you couldn’t include a peanut butter chocolate chip brownie in the frame to make the view even more delicious.

I think the tease works well without the visual evidence…and that way it remains a domestic secret.

Patience is called a virtue for a reason. It doesn’t always pay a dividend but when it does… 🙂 Thanks, Ann-Christine.

The combination of the radiant clouds and the soft mist is beautiful – how lovely to experience it! (And the brownie!)

The brownie was a plus but wouldn’t have been the same without the sunrise experience. I was humming and munching happily afterward. 🙂 Thanks, Ann.

Great advice, useful on so many occasions. As Nemo’s friend Dory said, “Just keep swimming.”

Yup, one step in front of the other gets you somewhere. Another movie I have never seen. A sheltered life I have lived.
