I gave my usual frog haunts a couple of looksees at the end of the vacation week and found only one in a not very attractive setting. Not even Photoshop could make it share worthy so to the archives we go.
I most often visit High Ledges, a Massachusetts Audubon Sanctuary in Shelburne, MA, for the wildflowers in spring, such as this for example. But occasionally another organism draws attention. I went a bit astray in my hike to check out a muddy pond and found this cute little green frog-Lithobates clamitans aka Rana clamitans cooling in the goodness.
The forecast for today is rain and temps in the mid 60’s so there may be frogs about this weekend but if not then it’s more archives or we’ll morph back into Fog Fridays.

Excellent frog portrait! The frogs here are probably enjoying the wet weather at the moment, but I need the rain to stop to let me get on with making a pond for them! 🙂

Same here today, Ann. Lots of rain and I love it. I am not sure how much it will add to our water levels but it has to make a difference. I hope you are able to get back out there to finish the pond. Maybe the frogs can help. 🙂

Handsome devil, that’s a vivid green. 37 here and lower than that for Sunday night, The frogs around here may be deciding to sack out in the mud for a little nap.

A green frog living up to his name. The green seems brighter I would think with the mud on his back end. We had a few nights that were in the upper 30’s but for the most part we are far higher than what would create ice. A little frost is okay. I bet some went to bed a little early. 🙂

Well alright, Fog Fridays will do in a pinch 🙂 For now, I’m feeling fantastic about this frog. I love how you’ve captured his markings. It looks like he’s dipped his face in duckweed and it is dribbling down his back.

The water around his legs makes it look as though he’s gotten caught in something more substantial than water. It has a quality I can’t quite identify; it’s viscous, like a pot of epoxy setting up. He’d better hope it’s just water and not epoxy, or getting to his winter hidey-hole is going to be tough.

It’s just good ol’ surface tension. I think it might be the result of sitting slightly lower than the ground level so the water flows down and capillarity pulls it up. Frogs seem to have a propensity for that phenomenon, especially when sitting on a lily pad. But that can be a little grippy so yeah, he had better be ready to give it a good push when it’s time to move along.

I think we all love Fridays but not all of us for the frog. 🙂 I am going to miss them. We still have a few warmish days ahead but that may not be enough to get them back up and sunning. I hope you like fog…and ice.

I still hear them around here sometimes but I never see them. I don’t think I have that knack. This one’s quite the handsome dude, or dudette.

It is easy to miss them. Sometimes the only thing above the water are their eyes but the polarizer helps reveal them in the image. It’s a dude. The tympanum, the round organ behind the eye, is larger than the eye on the males and smaller on the female.
