08.28.2020-2 Bedtime Spider

Bentley always goes out just before we go to bed.  Tonight I noticed another web below where the Spotted Neoscona had been last week.  This spider was much smaller and at first in the dark and with it being so tiny I photographed the underside which I didn’t realize until I loaded it into Lightroom. So I went back out and knelt in the ferns to get the right side of things.

White Micrathena- Micrathena mitrataKind of cute in a creepy sort of way.  🙂

The abdomen looks like an owl, perched on leggy branches. It wouldn’t be a night owl, would it? I guess not…

  2. Here again I can see a face in the abdomen.

  3. That is a real beauty, Steve! Worth getting your knees damp in the ferns 🙂

    • This was a first for me, Pete. Where the Neoscona showed up every night for a week before moving on (I’ve found others or the same one traveling in other locations in the yard since) I didn’t see a return performance the next night.

I’m always grateful that spiders are smaller than we are… what a nightmare to have something large and predatory like this coming at you, yikes!

I can also see several faces in this very cool spider’s dorsal abdomen. A very nice close to your day.
