This should be a popular slogan during this never-ending pandemic. Thanks for sharing it with us, Steve.

The sign reminds me of bakeries and cafés that have the phrase “Just Desserts” on their signs. If they knew the original meaning of the phrase, they’d know that it should be spelled “Just Deserts,” and that it has nothing to do with places like the Sahara.

The introduction to the linked article from Merriam-Webster says, “Despite its pronunciation, just deserts, with one s, is the proper spelling for the phrase meaning ‘the punishment that one deserves.’ The phrase is even older than dessert, using an older noun version of desert meaning ‘deserved reward or punishment,’ which is spelled like the arid land, but pronounced like the sweet treat.”

Now I want pastry for breakfast.

    • Many years ago Amherst had a dessert shop named “Just Desserts” with the best ice cream and the best wall decoration…a happy male lion swinging from a tree while eating an ice cream cone against a backdrop of hundreds of scoops of the sweet stuff. It was worth going just for the art.
Funny you should mention breakfast.I do have a healthy one, but during the morning I’ll often have a pastry as my mid-morning snack. I used to have that for breakfast until I got old enough to realize I needed a bit more nutrition…and my metabolism changed.

  6. And PALINDROME spelled backwards is EMORDNILAP. Somehow that’s not as catchy as the one in the sign.

So, from shaky panic to mouth-watering mellowness in one simple step? If only it were that easy.

Hmm, this must be why I broke down and made some Reese’s peanut butter chip cookies yesterday. I was a bit stressed by late morning, but forgot all about that after eating several cookies! Ha ha!
