Lots of fog this morning, a good thing, but when I got to my intended location, there was absolutely no visibility. So I set off for another spot where I though the fog would not be as thick…but it was. Then I decided to try a third spot that took me past spot number one. When I checked the first spot again as I passed by…Bingo! The fog had dissipated a touch and the one scene I had hoped for materialized.
There’s more but this will do for now. 🙂
I made an image under similar conditions years ago (seen here) and have been hoping for another opportunity for all the time since, hence my leaving home with something particular in mind. I certainly was open to more which is what will follow but I can’t tell you how many times I have visited this spot and hoped for this to be possible so making this image gave me a reason to smile. 😀
For inquiring minds….5d Mark IV, 70-200 f/2.8, f/11, 0.5 sec, ISO 100, tripod.
Very nice Steve! Beautiful image!

Instead of a beach, you captured a breach — it looks like a land whale breaching in a sea of cloud.

That’s an interesting interpretation. Is a land whale anything like a land shark?

Well, Google’s taken another step toward world domination. Here’s the message I got:
“To protect your security, http://www.youtube.com will not allow Firefox to display the page if another site has embedded it. To see this page, you need to open it in a new window.”
I did as my overlords commanded — now I need to go find my mallet! What’s interesting is that, down here, we usually drink our Landshark.

I think I recognize that label although am not actually a beer drinker. I guess if you have Candice Bergen as a guest host you don’t let the landshark eat her. There are other things that can happen to a landshark.

When I clicked the link I just got a random selection of YouTube videos to choose from. Maybe using Chrome makes a difference.

Once again it’s like Brigadoon magically appearing out of the mist. This time the sky island is more prominent than in the 2004 take.

Well, this was with my 70-200 at 200 and the older image was with the 24-70 so the wide angle does make the “island” look less prominent and there is much else to compete. Yesterday I was looking to isolate the hilltop.

So glad you passed by the first spot again just in time to capture this beautiful moment. The scene is evocative of so much …. right now I sense mystery and intrigue.

You and I both, Carol. 🙂 This will be in my portfolio…if I ever get it together to do one…along with the shot I posted today. It was a very successful few minutes and I almost missed it. Thanks!

Amazing how things just happen the right way sometimes.☺️

It looked like a good sunrise this morning, but I didn’t realize that the valley had fog. The hills don’t get it as often as the valley does, particularly along the CT river.

I am not sure what the river looked like but the weather map showed much of the lower valley in fog. And although this is at an elevation in New Salem, the watershed creates a lot of fog and in this case dense fog. I just hoped for the hill to be sticking out a bit, the color was a surprise bonus.

Very mysterious and beautiful – an island that will simply disappear.

Thanks, Ann. Actually it totally appeared after the fog dissipated. 🙂 At times it did disappear and then reappear as the fog rolled.

Glad to hear this worked out. I love the image, an island in the fog with the beautifully different range of tones above and below. It leaves the mind open to imagine what’s on the “island” and what’s below.

Yes, I was very happy when I made the second stop. It would have been a shame to have missed this but, of course, you don’t always know what you miss. And I was the only one there the entire time so this and the others to follow are definitely unique shots. Thanks, Todd.

Thank you, Allison. (I read a comment on your blog with your name…hope that’s okay. 🙂 )
It most certainly was worth it. A half hour drive to get there and another 15 minutes flailing about looking for a composition got me on the spot just in time. It’s a location I visit often but doesn’t always offer something this unique.

I’m not disagreeing with all the other comments, but what I like about this photo most of all is the abstract and minimal feel of it.

That’s what I was going for, Linda. I often try for the abstract within the real.

Hahaha we still laugh about the land shark 😀 This beautiful image makes me smile, too. It is haunting and reminds me of Brigadoon.

Yes, the best sketches were in the early years. That’s two Brigadoon memory kindles. Thanks, Melissa.
