I’m especially taken by those spiffy antennae. He does look friendly. I’m not afraid of grasshoppers, but I still can be a little creeped out by the big ones. I think it’s a holdover from childhood, when their noise and unpredictability got to me.

    • Yes, they are quite interesting with those bands. They remind me of the legs on a Virginian Tiger Moth.
It is interesting where some fears come from and, as with yours, most are bred during childhood. We don’t have any truly large grasshoppers here but there are some in the south that qualify. Lubbers come to mind. I’ve only seen them in pictures but would love to get close to one someday.

My first thought seeing this image was that you may have surprised this grasshopper just starting to feast on a leaf! And what a fine specimen!! Big, brown eyes, hairy legs, and such fine antennae. What a gorgeous creature… if only he wasn’t such a pest to those of us who garden!

    • It is a shame that they can cause garden woes but that’s what we get when we interact with Mother Nature. πŸ™‚ Insects can be quite attractive and I always enjoy seeing them up close and enjoy the variety of their appearance.

  4. It’s good that you got so much of the leaf in focus. Based on the species name, this grasshopper apparently has red femurs.

I love head-on shots, Steve. Sometimes they can be friendly and inviting, like this one, and sometimes they can be a bit menacing, but in either case they grab my attention.
