Something from the archives to encourage the return of winter this weekend.
I checked to see if I had shared this before but apparently I went on a forgotten three month hiatus at the beginning of 2018.
This was found on Puffer’s Pond in North Amherst on this day two years ago. I had never seen the pond with these chunks of ice and it immediately made me think I had been transported to Iceland. It’s clarity was amazing and there were quite of few others spread around although most were more cloudy.
It was 7°F on that day. Friday night we should return to winter with the temperature dropping to near zero or possibly below in spots. I’m rubbing my palms in anticipation and practicing to keep them warm. I recently purchased some lithium battery powered heated gloves. They’ve worked out well on the few days it’s been below 32° but this will be the real test of their value.

It looks like a prism: especially, the sort that are set into the decks of boats to provide additional light down below. The clarity is remarkable, and beautiful.

It certainly was clear enough to divide the light. I wasn’t aware that boats used prisms that way…or at all for that matter. Something new to add to all that stuff inside that makes the occasional word hard to recall. 🙂

Yup. The flat surface is flush with the deck, of course, and the rest of the prism extends into the space down below. They’re often used in sailboat V-berths, as those forward sleeping quarters usually have the least light.

As much as I prefer warm weather, I’m not ready for winter to be gone or see temperatures approaching what you are in for.

That’s what is so wonderful about nature, and about remaining young at heart – you go out and find new things, all the time. And if you can wear heated gloves, then you’ll probably find even more cool stuff! 😉

I have a feeling I’ll still need the heating pads along with the gloves but whatever it takes to be able to stay out longer. There is always something new and even repeated experiences have a difference to them.
