12.17.2019 A little snow on the ground

Meteorological winter arrived on December 1st and the calendar is playing catchup until next week.  With a storm arriving in the next hour or so the weather has become wintry and we are ahead of what would be the average snowfall if things continue as they have been.

Here are a couple of images from a hike in Quabbin Park after a light dusting.

I wasn’t the only one to walk by here.

Red fox prints.

  1. Good of you to recognize the prints as those of a red fox.

A lovely sight, says someone living in drought in Australia, with bushfires all around.

    • Thank you. It is an embarrassment of riches compared to what Australia is experiencing. I’d gladly send our approaching snow in your direction if at all possible. I don’t think either of our governments are taking these crises seriously enough.

You’ve captured the granular nature of the snow as well as the prints and the leaves. There’s just enough snow to collect in the leaves but not cover the upturned edges; the effect is lovely.

I don’t know the gait of a fox — is that a combination of front and rear paws?

    • I am not nearly an expert on tracks so my hunch is that the prints are of the left front and rear paws.

It was a very cool and crisp morning and fortunately not a heavy wet snow allowing for some nice detail. I actually focused on the snow and tried to get as parallel as possible to maintain focus throughout. Thanks, Linda.

I’m with Michael – I absolutely love the simplicity of that first image, it’s really, really nice.
