but sometimes you do, kinda sorta. And in this case I can say I got what I needed…something a bit different than any image I’ve made before.
As I was leaving the house to go to Wahconah Falls, there was just a hint of fog in the air but once out of the neighborhood and heading west, the fog built and thickened and I thought it would be a great opportunity for that orange ball I had been looking for a few weeks ago. I thought about those nice maples in Hadley and headed down South Maple Street when I noticed a slight orange glow and pulled over. The glow was right behind the trees and I quickly set up and made two exposures before the fog blocked the sun, not to be seen again for a while.
I did eventually go to Wahconah, images to come, but this would have been enough for me to feel photographically fulfilled for the day.
Right place, right time, right eyes. Wow.

Once the fog covered the sun entirely I smiled also, Liz. A WOW! captured. 🙂

Reminds me of certain impressionist paintings… beautiful!

It was a very happy surprise. I wasn’t expecting anything much less something for the portfolio. You just never know what’s waiting out there.

Very cool, what a sight. And seems like a moment not likely to be repeated anytime soon.

Probably not, but one never knows. The placement was serendipitous and luckily I decided to drive that way which isn’t exactly a straight line with the waterfall I was planning to visit. Thanks, Robert.

This pic is incredible. What a lucky shot to be there in the fog as the sun rose.

Lucky indeed, Yvonne. It only lasted for a minute or so and right time, right place.

I don’t remember ever seeing an image quite like this. Fog often seems flat, or impermeable. Apart from the lovely color, there’s an unusual sense of motion in this one — it feels more like sea fog than land fog. Did you know what you had at the time, or did you have to wait to see it on the screen?

I’ve seen a few rising suns in some fog, but not quite like this as you say. I’m not always a quick enough thinker to know just where I want to be but fortunately I figured out quickly what I wanted. Yes, I did know although I wasn’t sure the surrounding glow was there until I processed it.

That’s a lovely photo. It can be tricky taking photos in fog, but sometimes it works so well.

I am not sure whether I prefer fog or a glorious sunrise. Tough choice. I got lucky here with a combination. Thanks, Val.

It’s as though the trees might burst into flames at any moment!

Yes, that thought occurred to me that they might appear ablaze. Thanks, Tanja. 🙂

It would be enough for anyone, Id’ say. I’m glad you were out early and prepared – just gorgeous!!

Thanks, Lynn. It’s rare that getting out early isn’t rewarding. Even without an image like this, the fresh air and quiet environment makes it worth the outing. But I am exceedingly happy to have witnessed and captured this moment.
