03.10.2019 A little bit of Chapelbrook Falls

Another cold day yesterday, but it provided just what I hoped to see. For the last little while, most of the cascades and waterfalls have been frozen over which has its own appeal, but some moving water, as in the last few ice posts, offers contrast that adds to the interest.

There are three levels to this location, this being the second.

  1. Given the location, we can say you did your level best.

  2. I don’t have an witty quips/puns but I can offer my two cents worth> I like this one very much. It has much more appeal to me and I suppose it is because there is more of the actual falls in the image. I think it merits printing in my humble non pro eyes.

    • Thanks, Yvonne. I am considering printing it, but I have to get a bit more comfortable with the upper corners. They were being hit by the sun making them too bright. I did burn (darken) them with a tint based on the lower areas and added a vignette for the edges but still think they are too distracting.

  3. There’s a lot going on here. I wonder what it would look like in monochrome?

I’m really glad for the color here. I think the blues and earth tones actually accentuate the lines, and give a very cold scene a nice, unexpected warmth. I try to make myself appreciate black and white, but when I see a photo like this, I remember why I prefer color (unless, of course, the natural scene is given to black and white like trees in snow).

    • In most cases I am with you when it comes to color versus black and white. There are some cases, where the color may interfere with the composition or what I want the image to say, that I will convert to black and white (or if the scene is already pretty monochromatic), but most often I appreciate the color and want it to remain.

Do you have comparable photos of this specific place from other seasons? It would be fun to see. Another masterful image, Steve!
