At this point, I no longer remember why I didn’t get out on the first for a New Year sunrise…maybe it was overcast which seems likely…memory is a bit iffy. But I did get out on the second and the sky offered up a nice display.
We’ll see what tomorrow brings. We are receiving the northwestern edge of Winter Storm Helena and may see around 4 inches or so of snow. We could use more but I don’t want to tempt the fates and draw in the sort of snow and ice totals seen in the south and along the coast. All should clear by midnight or so and maybe a nice snowy landscape will greet a brilliant sunrise. Here’s hoping. 🙂
Beautiful winter photograph. I really like how you’ve captured the sun coming up from behind the trees and the early light casting a blue/mauve glow over everything. Perfect.

Thanks, Lottie. No way to avoid the trees so they became part of the composition. I am glad they work for you…once accepting them I like them too. 🙂

Beautiful shot. Even though it can be hard to see your footing sometimes, I love walking that time of day – “roamin’ in the gloamin'”

This is a pretty easy spot as it is just feet away from the parking area. But I do carry a flashlight for the times that require more travel. Have one that clips onto my hat brim too.

The lavender and blue combination is beautiful, and the dark blue streaks through the clouds are especially appealing. I like fireworks as much as anyone, but there aren’t any fireworks that can compare to this.

I agree on the fireworks/nature comparison, Linda. Although the man-made stuff can be spectacular. Maybe I should photograph fireworks someday…never have.

Beautiful and oh so cold looking. Here’s hoping you get what ever weather you are hoping for. Just keep those frigid temps to the north. 🙂 It was apparently 12 degrees last night in my area.

Thanks, Yvonne. We’ve had some cold nights, but recently just around freezing and above melting temperature during the day. Kind of disappointing.

I like the way the color of the snow mimics that of the sky.

Snow does make for some nice reflections in the foreground that we just don’t see at other times…aside from over water.

That’s a sunrise worth getting up for.

If only we could predict ahead of time. 🙂 Actually, even the disappointments are still a good reason to get out of bed and experience nature.

Doing my best, Jim. Added a few things and keeping the Raynaud’s under control.

Winter can be so lovely, with the snow reflecting the sky’s colors. This is a lovely composition.

I like the balance here between the foreground, which is nice and dark, even though it’s white snow, and the sunrise.
