Figured I should start up where I left off.
I am not sure exactly why I dropped out for the past month and not sure how much I will be posting, but I am still part of the community…just a bit reclusive for now.
Officially, calendar-wise, winter arrives on the 21st, but meteorological winter starts on the 1st of December. And…if the temperature is 12°F and there are icicles in Murphy Falls, then it is definitely winter.
As you can see, we are seeing a bit of a return to our flowing waters, although not nearly where it should be. While I am writing this, snow is falling (we should see a few inches) which is likely to change over to rain later this morning. Every little bit helps.

What a treat this is. I felt like Christmas had come early when I found your post announcement among my emails. I’m sure you’re happy with the gift of a little flowing water, too. It’s always such a pleasure to see your winter snow-and-ice photos — especially on a morning when I’m sitting here with the windows open and fog all around.
As for the photo, I very much like the way the ice clings to its right side, with the little extra bit behind the rock. It’s a nice complement to the flowing water, and a reminder of how long it’s been since I’ve eaten an icicle. Ice cubes just aren’t the same.

Warm enough for open windows sounds pretty good after the two arctic starts we had over the weekend, Linda. Of course, with that there’d be no ice so a conflicting emotion.
I haven’t eaten an icicle in years, not even those plastic-wrapped flavored variety. Matter of fact, not even crushed ice in a soda since I swore them off.
The ice on the right side gave me just the movement I wanted in the water to create an interesting “flow” through the image. Thanks, Linda.

Good morning. The snow you’re getting left us with 2″. Now it’s 6˚. Not much flowing water here.

We ended with about 3″, Jim. 6″ would have been welcomed as well. Now we are in for a warmish day before the single digits arrive Wednesday night.

I love waterfalls, and I’ve seen a heck of a lot of waterfall pictures on WP, and this one is a “standout”. I love this photo.

Thanks, Robert. This little waterfall, little now and not so little at wetter times, is a favorite spot just a few miles from the house. Bigger isn’t always better even with waterfalls. I am glad you enjoyed the image.

Gorgeous B&W which is my favorite form of photography. The pic does justice to the cold weather that you are enduring. It really does look terribly cold. I don’t have a window open like Linda because I’m about 180-200 miles north of Huston. I have an electric heater in my bedroom but now it’s warmed up so I can turn it off. And the sun is now out so it seems there’ll be a sunny day.

Thanks, Yvonne. The temperature is all relative. Speaking of relatives, I have a cousin in AZ who mentioned the other day being chilly and having to put some warmer outer clothes on. It was 67° there. 🙂
Bentley hates the rain and refuses to go out in it but doesn’t mind the snow or cold all that much. We aren’t having long walks like we did in the summer and autumn, but he is enjoying them.

Great to see you back, Steve. And very nice image. Waterfalls are always fun to photograph, so much shape and pattern, and the ice really adds something to this one. We haven’t seen any snow down this way yet, just rain. But there are rumors we may see a couple flakes Saturday before they turn back to rain.

I hope you get those flakes, Todd. I always look forward to ice season. Nature creates some wondrous forms when the temperature drops. My body isn’t particularly happy, but my inner photographer is. Thanks.

Oh, if only we in the warm parts of Texas could have some ice to play with, just for a little while. The high in Austin today was about 74°. While the current forecast for this coming Sunday is a low of 27° and a high of 39°, that probably won’t be cold enough long enough to bring out much ice, except maybe from the frostweed if we’re lucky.

Maybe not real ice, but you may see some frosty things besides the frostweed…which I hope you do see and photograph.

I went out looking on two mornings in the last two weeks, but not one bit of frostweed ice did I find. The temperature hadn’t gotten down to freezing in town despite forecasts that said it would. We’ll see if this coming weekend’s forecast is more accurate.
