04.26.2016 Beaver as Narcissus

Or as a Facebook friend suggested- Beaver (Castor canadensis) as Gemini.

Obviously, this is not recent.  Even less recent than you may think as it is from 2010.  But it crossed my vision as my screen saver slideshow played and I thought I’d like to share it again.

  1. After your many references to Pollux, it was time for us to get Castor.

I have a screen saver that “randomly” pulls from a folder with thousands of photographs in it, and I’m sometimes surprised by a picture I hardly remember. I put “randomly” in quotation marks because obviously the computer has to follow an algorithm to pick photographs. Some pictures have rarely shown up over the years.

I have the WordPress app on my iPad. When your post appeared, the title was there and a picture. But, the picture was a closely cropped version showing only a center view at the water line and no beaver. Curious. Once I got into the blog, I got the whole picture. Handsome fellow.

I really like this one, Steve! It’s beautiful with a bit of magic, but the beaver has his rodent grin to bring things down to earth.

    • There’s really only one wing of the rodent family that I am not fond of (Rattus norvegicus) but the rest are rather adorable. Maybe someone here will leap up to disagree with me.

  5. An adorable photo. The refection of the beaver in the water makes this photo very interesting. Love this one. I’m glad you posted it again.

Well, given that I’ve had a squirrel and a prairie dog for pets, it makes sense that I’d find your beaver completely adorable. Apart from its innate attractiveness, it’s a great photo. He seems entirely self-satisfied.

    • The pose is one of a fairly happy fellow. I liked the position of the paws and the tilt of the head. The name “rodent” gets a lot of bad pub thanks to the common rat, but I find them to be pretty cute and your history says that you do also.
