I was hoping for a Full Blue Moon in Blue Hour. But there was quite a bit of fog and the moon was almost totally blocked when I first got out this morning. I tried Mount Pollux but that was fully enveloped so I drove around to several other locations. Nothing, so I tried back at Pollux again and this time the fog was starting to clear a bit. I settled for the Blue Moon nestled in Venus’ Girdle.

It was meant tongue-in-cheek, Melissa. 🙂 I am quite pleased and possibly more than if I did get it in blue hour…although, in better conditions, I might have got both.

If we had two or more moons, you would be driving around the countryside like a crazy man trying to get just the right shot. That would be bad. It could lead to a Mr. Carlin moment like the one in the Bob Newhart show.

Yeah, I do tend to cover a lot of ground if I don’t like my first location. I do the same at Acadia. Getting out early gives me a bit of wiggle room.
I remember Mr. Carlin but not the reference.

Mr Carlin finished a session with Bob working on his decision making. He walked by the receptionist to leave and punched the elevator button. There were two elevators. Both sets of doors opened at the same time. He had to decide which to take.
He entered the left elevator. Stood a moment, then quickly went to the right one. He stood a moment and headed back for the left one. Before he could get to it, the doors on both elevators closed. He stomped away frustrated.

Thanks, Steve. It’s funny how few people are aware of blue hour despite it’s popularity as a subject for the arts. I’ve had folks question the color’s authenticity.

In that list, there’s one song that uses the word madrugada. I first met the word in a poerm with the word as its title. I used the word once, but I never was quite certain of its meaning. Some define it as the time between midnight and dawn, while others seem to suggest a time closer to dawn itself: and, hence, the blue hour. Which would be the most appropriate use of the word, or are both acceptable?

When I went back and looked for Madrugada, I clicked and saw the group under the lights in their picture and thought they were the Blue Man Group at first.

The only meaning I encountered in Honduras was ‘the time when night gives way to day,’ but I just looked in the Diccionario de la Real Academia Española and found one definition as ‘the time between midnight and dawn.’ I don’t know if that’s a regional sense or if I never understood the full extent of the word in Central America.

The Belt of Venus is one of my favorite sky phenomena, and this is one of the prettiest captures there could be. The addition of the moon always adds so much, and the valley fog is another plus. Just out of curiosity, did you adjust your sidebar links to go with the photo? I just noticed that their blue and lavender are almost exact matches to the colors in the photo.

This is a great location for the setting full moon and in the right conditions almost always yields Venus’ Belt.

I know this post goes back in time a bit but this is such a gorgeous photo and it’s new to me. Such a feeling of lots of open space and layers, and the colours are beautiful.
