This morning saw fog in certain locations, South Amherst being one. It borders Lawrence Swamp and there is so much moisture in the air that very often a cool night following a warm day will produce some nice ground fog just before sunrise. Last week things lined up nicely for a colorful sunrise with just a bit of mist over the ground. This morning’s daybreak location had a bit heavier dose of the wets.
I am having a bit harder time getting out early enough for sunrises these days. The 5:12 time isn’t the problem…it’s the 4 am exit from the house that I am struggling with which makes the more distant locations unreachable in time. Fortunately, some of the closer spots are working.
After three nights of little or no sleep, I finally got a good night of it last night and did not want to get up this morning. I’ll try to do better tomorrow. 🙂
This image is wonderfully evocative, isn’t it? Love it. I haven’t been sleeping either, and like you, last night I was finally out for the count. Now I’m sitting here blinking like an owl, waiting for my coffee to brew…

Thanks, Melissa. I was trying to create some peaceful mood with the fog and trees. Appropriately enough, this is behind the South Church in Amherst.
At least you have coffee as a helper…I have never had a taste for it.

I try to catch up with a nap in the afternoon. It works well.
That fog looks soupy. Did you get any rain from the passing clouds? It looks like TX got more than their share…again.

I also take an occasional afternoon nap, Jim. Unfortunately, they usually make me more groggy than if I was just tired.
Nope. There was rain to the north of us…rain to the south…rain to the east or us…and rain to the west. Nary a drop around here. Supposedly there is a 90% chance of rain tomorrow.

In your early morning winter ramblings, have you ever encountered ice spikes or vases?

Oddly enough, I never have. It seems like that should happen a lot, but I have yet to stumble across ice spikes…aside from the ones I wear on my boots.

This is such a good photo. I saw it on FB and was instantly drawn to it. Wonderfully atmospheric.

Thanks, Andrew. I’ve looked at this scene many times in the past few years waiting for the right amount of fog.

Sleep. Is. Important. If it takes missing a sunrise or a fogscape to get needed zzzs, then it’s part of the bargain. Let your body be your guide. You’ll be even more refreshed for the next op, and will be all the more alert for it. And there’s always coffee, in a dire emergency.

Despite my grousing about the difficulty getting up compared to previous years, I cannot go back to bed once I am fully awake, Gary. I’ve tried staying in bed after 4 but never am able to sleep…unless I am actually fighting a flu or something. So getting up and out isn’t of that much consequence. But I do try to get some rest in the afternoon as Jim and I chatted about above.
I’ve never had a taste for coffee and it makes me physically ill if I drink some.

CD’s the same with coffee, though she loves the smell. Tea’s her thing, and occasionally hot chocolate. But I love my coffee, and the darker and stronger the better (with New Zealand manuka honey)!

I like this B&W very much. It’s moody and mystical with the background trees surrounded in fog.

Wonderful work Steve, sleep is something I didn’t use to get too much of but with my recent health events I have been sleeping so much better !!

Thank you, Bernie. I would guess the meds help with sleep. I know my back pain medicine caused me to sleep like a log. In the past years, three or four hours of sleep was plenty…at least it felt like it was despite what is recommended. The years have caught up and more is needed. Mary Beth says it will be nice when I go back to work next week and start getting more sleep… as will she when she doesn’t have to get up at 4 to keep Murphy company in my absence. 🙂

It’s a delightful contrast, really. You’ve shown us a photo of the world taking its ease under covers made of fog, resting before the challenges of the day. And we humans? Many times, for many reasons, we don’t rest as easily as those hills and trees. We could take a lesson from the world, perhaps.

The world taking its ease and, as well, hiding what will be revealed in good time. I enjoy finding scenes that look so different when the fog obscures what is reality So much of what intrudes on our lives does the same…fogs our reality and causes us to see the world in one way when the truth is quite different.
