Why do I get up so early every day?

Well, the main reason is that Murphy expects his breakfast at 4, but I have always been an early riser since I had a paper route when I was young beyond memory.  My waking is how Murph got trained to expect an early feed.  Photographically, for me, the best light is when the air is still clean, the temperature is cool and there is no one else around…and if I am lucky the breeze is still at rest

This morning Civil Twilight was at 4:48 with Sunrise at 5:20 and the spot I had in mind is a 35 minute ride so out I went at 4:15.  As there were no other crazies like me out there, I made good time and arrived at 4:47 just as a glow was beginning to build in the east.  It was right behind Mount Monadnock…just as I planned it with the help of The Photographer’s Ephemeris.

After this I visited the Yellow Lady’s Slippers and a Pink Lady’s Slipper too.  Tomorrow I have been graciously invited to visit a restored field of Wild Lupines.  So far my week off is outstanding.  🙂

    I think I would get up at 4am for this Steve. Lulu has conditioned me to 5am (today 4.45) and I do agree there is nothing to beat the pre-dawn light when it delivers.

    Oh, my. Perhaps because this is Memorial Day weekend, and I’m predisposed to some patriotic throughts anyway, the phrase that came to mind was “purple mountains’ majesty.” These mountains certainly are majestic, and beautiful, too.

    I like the way the light rays stretching straight upward suggest a sun pillar. I think you might have had one, were it not for the clouds. Given the cooler weather you’ve had, it makes sense that there could be some ice crystals in the air.

    Magnificent photo of the a sunrise over the mountains. Dawn is really the best time of day and I think it’s great that you were conditioned as a youngster to get up with the chickens. Adopting the sleep pattern of chickens is after all, a good thing.

      I wish I had lived with a few chickens while growing up, Yvonne. I turned out OK, but I think I’d be even better had I experienced farm life rather than the city. When I see the sky develop as it did, it figuratively takes my breathe away. And occasionally literally as I get so busy making the images that breathing seems to become secondary. 🙂

    WOW! Definitely worth rising early for. I’ve been telling He-Man I can sleep when I’m dead. I became an early riser in my mid thirties, and like you morning is my favorite time to shoot.

    I hope you’re going to print this one. I bet it looks fantastic on a wall!

      Thank you, Deborah. I haven’t got a full night’s sleep in quite a while and it is starting to give me a hint of death. 🙂 There’s early and then there’s real early. Today was my first normal 4 am roll call.
      I probably will print it. I have one other of a similar sky filled with warmth that also has yet to be printed.
