Maybe I can rework Loudon Wainwright’s “Dead Skunk in the Middle of the Road” to accompany this image. 🙂
The other day, I raised the question of what to do with the big rock that was contributing to the strong flow in the second image of that post. I did get an image of the rock and, while not necessarily my most artistic undertaking, this does show the rock, its position and raises a question about how it got there. Is it a remnant erratic from the glacial retreat or am I just lucky I wasn’t standing there when it rolled down the embankment?

I am glad you like this big rock, Jim. I do like this rock also and plan on photographing it again although I think it looks best during high water without all the other smaller rocks that surround it exposed and competing.

The contrast between the flowing water and the solidity of the rock is compelling. It certainly looks as though the rock might be connected to those at the far left of the photo. Given that, I’m voting for a more recent rock fall. Maybe it grew tired of hanging around the cliffs, and decided to hit the road.
You choose your title well. I was thinking of the song as soon as I read it. Amazing, how some songs embed themselves into our collective unconscious.

Based on your theory I will be wary of falling rocks when I visit there in the future, Linda. It does bear strong resemblance to others. One of the things I always watch out for when I am in these places is a piece of timber riding the waves over a falls and at me. It’s never happened but is one of my little paranoias. .
That’s exactly how the title came about. As I started writing the title it just fell into place as the song popped into my head…all the syllables match perfectly.

Happens to me a lot, Lyle. Lately it’s been ACDC’s Thunderstruck….which is odd as I am not an ACDC fan. Sometimes it’s others. It gets in there and won’t leave.

The rock looks like it’s about to fall over, but that must be an illusion. Still, I’m not sure you’d want to stand on the far side of it.

I think the illusion may be the 17mm effect. I corrected as best as possible in PSCC but think the angle is still a bit distorted. You are correct though…I would not want to take my chances on retreating form the sun under the shade of this rock.
It’s possible that younger folks would like this song, but I think your premise is pretty close to spot on.

By the way, I’ve owned Loudon Wainwright III’s “Album III” since the 1970s. It’s the album with “Dead Skunk” on it. I guess we can infer the approximate age of the commenters here who say they recognize the song.

Steve’s Rock – One of life’s many mysteries. Do you remember the craze for Pet Rocks? maybe it was only in the UK but what an ingenious bit of marketing – more fool those peeps who paid good money for what was essentially a pebble gathered from a beach and stuffed in to a box. I think your rock is safe 😀

Yup, pet rocks. I couldn’t believe people would spend their money and time with those things. Tamagotchis too! I don’t think you are old enough to remember the pet trolls in the early 60’s. Crazy.
I like the sound of “Steve’s Rock”. Not sure it will catch on with the locals though. 🙂

A rock here and a rock there and this rock is perfect for a rock that rolled. I really like the monochrome of this photo. The rock is outstanding and it completes the picture in this instance. You composed this shot very well.
