Anyone in the mood for a cold shower?
Chapel Brook Falls is made up of two upper sections as well as a few lesser falls below the main two. See here for some warmer times at this location. My position for this image was between the two upper sections and, as you can see from the link, the second upper falls is like a water slide. So, as I was kneeling behind my tripod setting up for this shot, I thought about how, if I fell through the ice even though it was thick, the strong flow would suck me under the ice and I would spend the rest of the winter encased on that slide. My paranoia stems from a fall through ice when I was 10. Amazingly, I bobbed back up into the same hole I fell through….at least I think I did. Maybe this is all a dream as I am drowning. Time for that cold shower, methinks.
Enough with the waltz down memory lane…here’s the image for today.
If this is all a dream, then that would be odd, wouldn’t it? I mean….usually it is your past life that flashes before your eyes. What an odd post. 🙂

Most of the time, Lyle. 🙂 I’m usually too busy enjoying the view and capturing the image to pay attention to what might happen. But most often I’ve weighed that ahead of the shoot. This was a rare moment of carelessness. 🙂

Are you saying that you were kneeling ON THE ICE? Yikes, that doesn’t sound like a good idea. But you captured another wonderful image.
I think you could name this one Fantasy On Ice.

Kneeling…standing…being on the ice was the place to be and, really, it was pretty thick and quite safe. But because of my childhood experience I let my imagination get the better of me..

There are amazing things that happen to water in the winter. While not as non-repetitive as snowflakes, there is always something new to see in the formation of ice.

Exquiste beauty of the ice and falls. But———– I have just read about some reckless behavior here. Paa-leese take a buddy with you when on ice. I hope that I misread that. But it you must, this is what you do. Strap a harness onto your body, use a strong rope and attach that to the harness and then all of that to a human. If no human then a sturdy tree. If you fall in then you can pull yourself by reeling yourself to safety by using your hands.
Getting a picture that is stunning is not worth losing your life.
OK now you may go Mr Gingold. I have finished with my lecture. 😉
PS: I think this is a shot that will sell as a print. It is superb.

Thanks for your concern, Yvonne. Really, I do appreciate it. I was not alone although my friend was on the other side of the road. Had he come over there would have been my bag, tripod and a hole. He’d have figured it out, I think. Your suggestion is good and it is employed often by smart photographers and fishermen. Maybe I will add some rope to my kit although this was a while back and I have grown much less devil may care about my activities. Also, I don’t carry my 40 lb. pack on my back any more when on the ice. See, I am getting smarter. 🙂

Geez, Yvonne. That’s like asking me to show a picture of my best looking kid….if I had any, that is. 😆 If I have a chance, maybe I will do a belated favorites post like a lot of folks do around the first of the year.

I’m going to do a few repost of some of my favorute pics. Of course I can not compare or compete with you but if I were younger and not tied to my animals I might give you a fair run but you’d have to give me the edge.
Just joking with you Steve but then you can never really tell when I’m joking or not. A blogger that I follow., Kathy of Lake Superiour Spirit can never telll when I am joking with her. It gets downright pitiful sometimes. I do have fun with my comments and bloggers replies.

Thanks, Pen. Yeah, I often wonder whether this is all just a movie inside our head. But then I realize that I am just not smart enough to imagine most of what is going on around us. I mean…I have friends who are scientific geniuses and I have no idea what they are talking about even when they speak slowly and use short words. 😀
I don’t think cold showers are good for much really…not even what they are reputedly good at. I took one two years ago during a power outage and I think next time I will just go ahead and stink.

Oh come on! Let the man risk his life kneeling on the ice. Look at the result. Well worth risking a claim on the life insurance. NOT. Terrific photo Steve but Yvonne is right. Buddy up or harness up. You know it makes sense.

Oh come on. 🙂 Really, I am much more cautious now…especially since my shooting partner who was with me, although at a distance, is now in Maine shooting moose and at a much greater distance. Mary Beth actually has two policies on me. If she reads this it may go to three. 🙂

Thanks so much, Lottie. It is funny how I have been discovering images on my hard drive that are getting good reviews at a later date. This is one as was “The Touch” and others.

Thank you, Steve. That is one of the elements about shooting these frozen cascades that attracts me. Sometimes I let the water become even more silky, but often I like it to have a little textural flow along with the solid ice.
