Harvard Pond, a property of Harvard Forest, is another of those places I can’t stop visiting over and over. See the top of the page.
Also from Sunday morning the 28th, here is another monochrome but not quite so abstract. I went to Harvard Pond with the fallen branch and reflection in mind. But when I got out of the van I saw the sun streaking through these trees and decided to make this image first. The fog was drifting across the water, changing its shape and with varying luminosity. I chose this frame as I liked both the strength of the filtered light and the streaks of fog and shadow coming from the tree on the point. I think the sky would be even better with clouds and some blue sky (converted to black and white of course) but that wasn’t available this time.
Please click the image for a larger view.I am beginning to be quite taken with black and white imaging, but color will return shortly.
I love the mist coming off the water – very moody and atmospheric! I’m liking your B&W’s a lot. I think they work beautifully for this sort of thing. Flowers, plants and animals need to be in colour but landscapes and objects often work better in monochrome as the features seem to stand out better. I wonder what Birthday Boy thinks?

Thanks Lottie. I am glad you are liking these. But you have challenged me to post a flower or two in monochrome now. They do work…you’ll see. 🙂

Excellent! Thanks Steve 😀

I love this! Could you try a red filter (digitally?) for the sky, Steve? Lottie needs to see the monochrome Trillium (and then buy it and hang it on the wall). Monochrome rocks.

Thanks, Andrew. I did try a red filter, but it didn’t help…the sky was all white to start with so nothing much to darken.
The trillium will indeed make an appearance for the empress’ amusements. 🙂

This is excellent. What a beautiful photograph. In my humble opinion this is worthy of becoming a print for sale. This pic has all the qualities of a 5 star rating. The fog and the play of light on the water is fantastic. It is eye catching and fetching. I can’t come up with any original descriptions but I think you get the “picture.” 🙂

Your monochrome work is just stunning Steve. I wish mine were half as good.
This is a gorgeous image, and such a great product of a morning out.

You and I seem to keep missing each other by hours. I was at Harvard Pond with the wife and kids on Sunday as well, but Sunday afternoon. I did an entry on sunrise at this venue last year around this time……I even almost caught a fish while doing some casual fishing on Sunday -would have been my first in years. Not exactly an adept Fisherman I guess, but the serenity and ease of access of this spot are worth it nonetheless. I love it when the fog is rising off the water like that. You should take a boat out on the Quabbin early this summer and you’ll get tons more of that.

The last time I was in a boat on the Quabbin was probably 50 years ago fishing with my father. I’ve done a few fog shots at the Quabbin but from the shore….see this from the end of Gate 15: https://sggphoto.files.wordpress.com/2011/05/gate-15-island-in-fog-052111-1-12003.jpg . I like the fog in the forest a bit more but should try a boat ride some time.

You can get good shots of fog in the forest from the water too, but I understand what you’re saying. The only place “in the forest” that I’ve found good fog was in “Bassettville” (as I call it). If you take Gate 33 (Blackinton) to the intersection with Hager and turn right before Bassett Pond, go up the hill and at the first right, look diagonally right and you’ll see an open field. It wasn’t the best, but it was technically fog in the forest. Do you know of any good places/times of year to go for something like that?

Not specifically. I usually just walk. I have had good luck along Atherton Brook in Gate 15 and in Quabbin Park as well. I had a nice experience several years ago at Harvard Pond…. http://stephengingoldphoto.photoshelter.com/gallery-image/Landscape/G0000RD78mGTOW5Q/I0000OvbSgqjnosE and at a small waterfall in Pelham http://stephengingoldphoto.photoshelter.com/gallery-image/Waterfalls-Cascades-Brooks-and-Streams/G0000OhCylQAaR8Y/I0000kq8AVi0km_c
